Better Homes & Gardens 365 Vegetarian Meals Review

I am a health-conscious and long-time vegetarian who loves to cook simple and delicious meals. I honestly wasn't prepared to be impressed by 'Better Homes and Gardens 365 Vegetarial Meals' because I thought it would be banal. I was very wrong and I love this cookbook! The layout is so nice too, and the photos are inspiring. I only keep a few cookbooks in my collection, the really good ones, and this is definitely one to keep.
Keep in mind that this is a VEGETARIAN cookbook, not vegan, so if you're looking for a vegan cookbook, look elsewhere. The title says "vegetarian" and they mean it. So if a vegan is upset that they used cheese in some recipes, they may need to reread the cookbook's title. BH&G 365 does offer many vegan options, but the cookbook is aimed at vegetarians.
Check the cover out--it's got tempeh on it! (Specifically Hoisin Tempeh with Stir-Fry Vegetables.) So many mainstream vegetarian cookbooks only cook with tofu, omitting the less popular veg proteins like tempeh & seitan. This cookbook has tons of tofu recipes, lots of tempeh recipes, but only one seitan recipe. At least they included one.
Another thing I appreciate is that they have a test kitchen and cook every single recipe. Here is what BH&G says about this: "On average, any recipe that the Test Kitchen approves for publication is tested three times. It's not just about making a recipe -- it's about testing it to make sure the kitchen is pleased with the results." It's really good to know when you're going to make a recipe, that's its been made before several times. I've known some cookbooks that really got their measurements wrong, or forgot to include crucial steps, or listed improper ingredient descriptions. This is not one of those cookbooks.
Each recipe includes the following information up at the top: Prep Time, Bake Time, Oven Temp, # Servings. It's also got the nutritional breakdown which I truly appreciate. Makes life easier when you know what you're eating. Many recipes also include a "Tip" at the bottom, no doubt from their test kitchen. The tips are really helpful too, such as suggesting to cook a few more pasta shells in case some of them tear. Brilliant, but you'd only get that from testers who experienced that.
So, here's where it really counts: I made the Baked Stuffed Shells (only 234 calories for two) and the Tortilla and Black Bean Bake (267 cal per serving). Both were fabulous and my family devoured them! These were some lighter recipes, they've got plenty of higher cal foods too, a great selection of foods. These two recipes were simple to make and I'll be making them again.
The food chapters are: Breakfast, Slow Cooker, Short & Simple, Pasta, Pizzas and Sandwiches, Salads, Grilling, Casseroles, Beans Rice & Grains, Soups and Stews.
This cookbook makes cooking easy. The ingredient list is BASIC too. I had so many of the ingredients on hand for what I wanted to cook, which I appreciate. And their recipes don't include offbeat ingredients that you'd have to purchase at a specialty food store (or use only once!). Saves you time and money. I can't wait to try some more recipes, I really love this cookbook and I'm so glad I got it. You won't regret getting it, it's got something for everyone, and good, easy recipes to add to your rotation.
